Top 10 Dividend Companies To Buy Right Now

Procter & Gamble (PG) announced that it will be selling the bulk of its pet food business to Mars Inc for $2.9 billion. The rationale is to focus more on its personal care and cleaning brands. This article discusses the reasons for believing that P&G will remain a value creator, as it has been in the past.

Looking at the past, P&G has returned $88 billion of cash to shareholders in the last 10 years through dividends and share repurchase. Further, in terms of stock price, the company rolling 20-year returns have exceeded both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 46 out of 48 periods, or 96% of the time.

Coming to the present, one of the biggest growth drivers for P&G will be emerging markets. P&G business can flourish in an environment where there is population growth along with rising income levels. This holds true for all emerging markets in Asia as well as emerging Africa. I believe this is where growth will come for P&G in the future. While the company has stated that it intends to use the cash proceeds from the pet business sale for general corporate purpose, I believe that a majority of the proceeds will flow into growing market share in emerging markets.

Citigroup announced on Wednesday that it was maintaining a “Neutral” rating on the Glenview, IL-based industrial conglomerate, Illinois Tool Works (ITW), but went on to raise its price target for the company.

Deane Dray, an analyst with the firm, noted “Following its disclosure in February 2013 that it was reviewing strategic alternatives for its $2.4 bil Industrial Packaging business, ITW officially announced on Sept-24 that the sale process has begun. In an incremental positive, the company declared that all the dilution from the divestiture would be offset by buybacks and that additional balance sheet leverage will be used to fund the program.” Given the lagged benefit of the expected buyback, Citigroup raised its price target on the stock from $75 to $80 a share.

Illinois Tool Works shares traded lower on Wednesday, shedding 0.97% on the day. The stock is up 27% YTD.

Shares of Ralph Lauren (RL) are all dressed up and they definitely have somewhere to go–up–after beating earnings forecasts today.

    Associated Press

    MarketWatch has the details:

For the period ended Sept. 28, Ralph Lauren reported a profit of $205 million, or $2.23 a share, down from $214 million, or $2.29 a share, a year earlier. Analysts recently expected $2.20…

The company raised the lower end of its estimated revenue range for the year by one percentage point and now projects an increase of 5% to 7%. For the current quarter, the company forecast revenue growth of 8% to 10%, in line with recent estimates of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters for an increase of 9%.

Ralph Lauren also unveiled a quarterly dividend increase of 13% to 45 cents a share.

Citigroup’sKate McShane likes what she sees:

RL shares are trading higher today on a more bullish outlook through the rest of the FY, w/ increased top-line expectations driving plans to further accelerate SG&A investments in key LT initiatives. While the retail environment remains challenging (weak US traffic, proactive reductions in Europe, and F/X & dept store headwinds in Japan), mgmt maintained expectations of an acceleration from 1H to 2H and expressed confidence from strong Q2 performance across channels/regions (esp luxury accessories), contributions from new DTC, share gains, & Asia (+DD in Q2 ex-Japan). RL integration of the Chaps/Australia/NZ licenses & multi-year SAP rollout are also on track. We reiterate our Buy as our LT thesis on RL global secular growth remains intact, driven by int expansion, DTC, & category growth.

Shares of Ralph Lauren have gained 5.2% to $180.07 at 3:33 p.m. today, and they’ve even boosted other apparel companies. PVH (PVH) has gained 0.7% to $125.75, Hanesbrands (HBI) has advanced 1.3% to $68.25 and VF Corp. (VFC) is up 0.9% to $2221.78.

Piper Jaffray reported on Wednesday that it has downgraded Ralph Lauren Corp (RL) to “Neutral.”

The firm has cut its rating on RL from “Overweight” to “Neutral,” and has lowered its price target on the company from $200 to $170. This new price target suggests a 6% upside from the stock’s current price of $159.64.

An analyst from the firm noted: s we think about the RL stock (not the company) over the next 6-12 months, we are stepping to the sidelines, moving our rating from OW to Neutral ($170 PT). To be clear, we view RL as a core holding for the longer-term oriented investor (2 yrs+) as we believe global growth initiatives in China, accessories & the prospects for accelerated sq-ftage (Polo stores in Europe) will create margin expansion opportunities over time. That said, in the absence of a compelling apparel spending environment and with a multi-year investment cycle underway, we believe earnings upside could be more limited. We believe money flow will favor equities but expect investors will pay up for visibility in beat & raise stories as we navigate through the evolving global retail landscape./p>

Ralph Lauren shares were down 92 cents, or 0.57% during Wednesday morning trading. The stock is up 7% YTD.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

You can find many examples of this phenomenon recently:

Late last month, Pitney Bowes (NYSE: PBI  ) cut its dividend in half after announcing worse-than-expected sales and income. The stock had suffered from weakness in Pitney Bowes' core mailing and enterprise business solutions segments, and the company chose to sacrifice its former double-digit yield in order to shore up its financial condition. Even after the cut, the stock still yields a fairly high 5%. In February, CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL  ) cut its dividend by about 25%, again after reporting weak guidance for its earnings for the remainder of 2013. Even though the rural telecom company chose simply to put cash previously earmarked to pay its former yield of 7% toward share buybacks instead, the stock plunged more than 20% in response to the move, although it has rebounded significantly since then as investors recognized the fundamental benefits to the company from the capital reallocation. Until three months ago, Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE: CLF  ) had a high dividend yield approaching 7% despite terrible conditions in its iron-ore and metallurgical-coal businesses. After announcing earnings in mid-February, the company cut its dividend by more than three-quarters in a move that will conserve cash for the ailing producer of raw materials for steel production. Now, the stock yields just 2.6%.

That's not to say that all of the highest dividend paying stocks are doomed to reduce their payouts. Businesses that are designed to focus on maximizing cash flow rather than seeking growth can often sustain very high yields for years. Vanguard High Dividend Yield (NYSEMKT: VYM  ) and other dividend ETFs use a combination of factors beyond simple yield to choose stocks with sustainable high payouts.
